Daruieste si salveaza padurile virgine din Romania!

Draga prietene,

Suntem Martin și Pinocchio, doi urși fericiți. Avem un mesaj important pentru tine.

Am vrea sa îți mulțumim – vorbim acum și în numele celor aproape 6.000 de urși din România, jumătate din populația Europei – pentru că te-ai gândit la noi. Pentru că tu și alți peste 100.000 de prieteni ai naturii ați semnat petiția pentru salvarea pădurilor virgine din România, casa noastră este mai bine protejată.

Oameni importanți, de la București, au fost impresionați de o așa solidaritate și au decis să salveze de la tăiere aceste păduri cum nu prea mai găsești în Europa și chiar în lume. Cine zicea că nu suntem bogați?

Ceea ce am vrea să îți spunem este că tu poți face și mai mult pentru noi și pădurile virgine din România. Vine Crăciunul și cu toții căutăm darurile care să îi bucure pe cei dragi. Tu poți să dăruiești un cadou moale și pufos, un ursuleț de pluș WWF, unei persoane la care ții, poți să faci un dar de neprețuit pădurilor virgine și te poți bucura că ai făcut o faptă bună.

Cum?, ne întrebi. Foarte simplu, îți răspundem. ADOPTĂ UN URS! Contribuția ta îi va ajuta pe oamenii aceia inimoși de la WWF-România să protejeze casa noastră din pădurile virgine ale României. Iar tu vei face un cadou de neprețuit. De fapt, trei cadouri: pentru cineva drag, pentru pădurile virgine și pentru tine.

Şcoala Europeană Bucureşti a câştigat competiţia internaţională Şcoli europene pentru o planetă vie

Viena, 7 Iunie 2011 – Şcoala Europeană Bucureşti a fost desemnată printre cei patru câştigători ai competiţiei internaţionale dedicate mediului înconjurător Şcoli europene pentru o planetă vie, o iniţiativă WWF, împreună cu Fundaţia ERSTE. Aflat la cea de-a treia ediţie, concursul a fost lansat în noiembrie 2010 şi s-a încheiat în această săptămână, prin ceremonia de decernare a premiilor, care a avut loc la Viena.

Formată din 17 elevi şi coordonată de profesorul Daniela Elena Ştefan, echipa Şcolii Europene din Bucureşti a realizat un proiect pe care l-a numit GRRREEN (Go, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Everything, Everywhere, Now). Şcoala Europeană a concurat cu alte 29 de echipe din opt ţări europene: Bulgaria, Croaţia, Ungaria, Moldova, România, Serbia, Slovenia şi Ucraina. Acestea au răspuns iniţiativei WWF de a proteja natura şi viitorul Europei, astfel, timp de şapte luni, elevii de 12-17 ani au realizat proiecte de protecţia mediului înconjurător, având ca teme „Dunărea – linie a vieţii Europei” şi „Amprenta ecologică”. Aceştia au realizat cercetări, au discutat autorităţile, au organizat expediţii în natură şi au desfăşurat o gamă largă de activităţi, de la construirea de grădini în curtea şcolii, la evenimente de stradă şi spectacole de teatru, expoziţii şi campanii de tipul "elevii îi învaţă pe elevi".

Patru echipe din România, Republica Moldova, Croaţia şi Serbia au câştigat competiţia, toate abordând tema Amprenta Ecologică. Elevii Şcolii Europene, în vârstă de 12 ani, au ales să se concentreze, aşa cum sugerează şi numele proiectului, pe tema reciclării. Printre altele, ei au organizat evenimente de promovare şi informare în grădiniţe, au iniţiat evenimente publice, s-au întâlnit cu politicieni şi au oferit interviuri în presa locală, prin care au transmis mesajul GRRREEN.
“Prin proiectul Şcoli europene pentru o planetă vie dorim să le oferim elevilor posibilitatea de a se implica, de a-şi exprima opinia în mod public şi de a-i motiva şi pe ceilalţi să acţioneze“, a declarat Barbara Tauscher, Coordonator al programului de educaţie ecologică din cadrul WWF Austria. “Pentru noi, implicarea totală a elevilor reprezintă cea mai importantă realizare”, adăugat Tauscher.

Câte cinci copii din fiecare echipă câştigătoare vor participa la o tabără de o săptămână în natură, în Austria, în toamna acestui an. „Vrem să încurajăm schimbul de experienţă între elevi chiar şi după încheierea competiţiei” , a spus Tauscher. „De aceea, pe termen lung, vrem să formăm o reţea la nivelul mai multor ţări, formată din tineri preocupaţi de conservarea naturii”.
“Tinerii sunt cei care au puterea de a modela viitorul, aşadar trebuie să-i încurajăm în iniţiativele de protejare a mediului şi de identificare a unor soluţii creative în acest scop. Acesta este şi motivul pentru care Fundaţia ERSTE susţine proiectul internaţional Şcoli europene pentru o planetă vie şi suntem impresionaţi de implicarea elevilor şi a profesorilor deopotrivă” a declarat Boris Marte, membru al Comitetului de Conducere al Fundaţiei ERSTE. „A sprijini proiectele educaţionale înseamnă a trata cu seriozitate viitorul Europei. Posibilitatea de a-şi împărtăşi interesul pentru problemele ecologice în cadrul unui proiect internaţional reprezintă o experienţă remarcabilă atât pentru elevi, cât şi pentru profesori”.
Evoluţia proiectelor prezentate de-a lungul celor 3 ediţii poate fi urmărită prin intermediul unui blog accesibil publicului larg: http://schools.foralivingplanet.eu. Aici, echipele din şcoli au ţinut jurnale de proiect, au postat fotografii şi filmuleţe şi au avut oportunitatea să îşi împărtăşească experienţele.

Don't wait: Their habitat is melting away‏

My story begins in the Arctic. I'm riding in a beaten-up van with caterpillar-tracks, inching my way across the tundra of northern Canada, 40 miles from Churchill.

After a two hour-long drive I reach my destination: the Arctic wilderness. Battling biting cold winds and wrapped in a massive parka, I get out and stand alongside my colleague Peter Ewins, WWF Arctic wildlife biologist.

Less than 100 meters away, a polar bear mother rests as her 10-week old cub alternates between tugging on her neck and batting at barren twigs. I'm awed by how this immense animal can be so gentle, patiently tolerating the cub's tugs and nips. The mother polar bear's sheer size, magnificence and affection toward her offspring are amazing.

But I'm not in the Arctic to simply experience the awe of this beautiful species--I'm here because the plight of the polar bear is far from certain.

Researchers say that by the time the cub grows to be an adult, in 2035, the lack of sea ice near Churchill will make life here impossible for the polar bear to survive.

Higher temperatures from climate change are causing sea ice to form later and melt sooner than ever before, and the polar bear diet consists almost entirely of seals that these animals hunt on the sea ice. This forces polar bears ashore before they can build up sufficient body weight to stay healthy until returning to the sea ice months later.

Scientists have found that polar bear litter sizes are steadily declining because mothers are too malnourished to bring cubs to term or nurse them as infants. Historically, triplets and twins would commonly emerge from maternity dens, but now twins and singletons (like this cub before me) are the norm.

WWF scientists and staff are working tirelessly to help save polar bears, but it is an uphill battle.

Winter temperatures in northeastern Canada are now warmer than normal, and continuing to climb. The same situation faces polar bears in Alaska, where WWF is working to build support for sustainable management of bear habitat.

These problems aren't just isolated to the Arctic--they are felt in ecosystems around the world. The solutions lie in reducing our addiction to dirty fossil fuels, using our energy more efficiently, and powering our economies with clean, renewable energy.

The solution to saving species like the polar bear is within our grasp. Will you help us seize it?

The remarkable waters of the Bering Sea attract marine mammals such as bowhead whales and beluga whales, which travel great distances to forage and raise their young.

40 percent of the fish caught
in the United States each year
comes from the Bering Sea.

Of all of the wildlife species in the Arctic, the polar bear is perhaps the most fitting icon for this ecoregion. Its amazing adaptations to life in the harsh Arctic environment and dependence on sea ice make this species so impressive.

But, today polar bears are vulnerable. Why?

Arctic sea ice is melting at an unprecedented rate. Polar bears depend on sea ice to access their food, raise their young, and to move from hunting grounds to seasonal summer resting areas. This loss of habitat is the greatest threat the world’s polar bears.

To help polar bears in the Arctic, WWF works to:

Fund field research by the world's foremost experts on polar bears to learn about the status of polar bear populations and the impacts of climate change on the species and their habitat.
Support community-based activities in which Arctic communities are creating protected areas, establishing “polar bear patrols” to protect both bears and people, and collecting first-hand observations on behaviors to share with scientists.
Reduce emissions and mitigate climate change through partnerships with governments, industry and individuals.
Assess and mitigate the threat of poaching, illegal trade and unsustainable tourism.
Protect critical polar bear habitat, including movement corridors and denning grounds.
Mitigate--or remove--direct threats from industrial activity such as offshore oil and gas development and arctic shipping.

Large carnivores are sensitive indicators of ecosystem health. And, that's why we study polar bears--to gain an understanding of what is happening throughout the Arctic.

But it's not just polar bears that are at risk... it's the entire Arctic region.

The Arctic faces an uncertain future due to such threats as climate change, pollution, oil and gas exploration, and, in some areas, damaging fishing practices. For nearly 20 years, WWF has been working to combat these threats and preserve the Arctic's rich biodiversity so that this special place continues to benefit wildlife and people for generations to come.

We seek to build resilient wildlife populations, for such species as polar bears, whales, caribou, salmon and walrus.
We support community leaders in their conservation efforts to ensure sustainable use of marine resources.
We advocate for changes in federal regulations governing oil spill prevention, spill response, shipping practices and wildlife protection in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.
We conserve and build resilient marine and coastal habitats while securing sustainable fisheries and fishing families.

Ten of these were critically endangered black rhinos, of which only about 3,500 individuals still remain. Why are so many rhinos being killed?

The recent rhino crime wave is largely due to a rising demand for rhino horn, which has long been prized as an ingredient in traditional Asian medicine. Its popularity increased in Vietnam after claims that rhino horn possesses cancer-curing properties, despite any medical evidence.

Today's wildlife poachers are well coordinated and employ advanced technologies. Their sophisticated criminal networks use helicopters, night-vision equipment, veterinary tranquilizers and silencers to kill rhinos at night--attempting to avoid military and law enforcement patrols.
How can we stop this?

WWF and TRAFFIC, our global wildlife trade program, are working to combat the crisis on a global scale. Locally, we support anti-poaching operations, introducing transmitters in rhino horns, facilitating regional dialogues on security and raising awareness among the public. WWF's Black Rhino Range Expansion Project in South Africa aims to increase the overall numbers of black rhino by making breeding lands available--with the goal of reaching a national target of 5,000 black rhinos. Globally, we are focusing on reducing demand in consumer nations and stopping wildlife trafficking through such initiatives as aiding enforcement officials to detect rhino horn in transit.

The rate of threatened wildlife poaching cannot continue unabated. We need your urgent help to protect these and other animals and their habitats.

WWF Programul Dunăre-Carpaţi

WWF a inclus Fluviul Dunărea şi Munţii Carpaţi printre cele mai importante 200 de eco-regiuni din lume, cu o diversitatea biologică remarcabilă. Programul Dunăre-Carpaţi al WWF a fost înfiinţat în anul 1998, cu scopul de a derula proiecte de conservare, refacere şi administrare durabilă a zonelor naturale din aceste două regiuni.

Din Munţii Pădurea Neagră, Germania, până la vărsarea în Marea Neagră, România, Dunăreaparcurge 2.800 km şi traversează 10 ţări şi patru capitale. Bazinul hidrografic al Dunării cuprinde 18 ţări: Albania, Austria, Bosnia şi Herţegovina, Bulgaria, Croaţia, Cehia, Germania, Italia, Ungaria, Macedonia, Moldova, Polonia, România, Serbia şi Muntenegru, Slovacia, Slovenia, Elveţia şi Ucraina. 20 de milioane de oameni sunt dependenţi de Dunăre pentru traiul de zi cu zi (apă potabilă, spre exemplu).

De la zonele sălbatice de pe braţele mijlocii şi inferioare ale fluviului, până la peisajele spectaculoase pe care le oferă Delta, la vărsarea Dunării în Marea Neagră, de-a lungul fluviului se întind cele mai numeroase zone umede din Europa şi din lume.

Munţii Carpaţi se întind pe cuprinsul a şapte ţări, din Cehia, Polonia, Slovacia, Ucraina şi Ungaria, până în Serbia şi România, adăpostind unele dintre cele mai sălbatice zone din Europa. Carpaţii adăpostesc cea mai mare populaţie de carnivore mari din Europa - urşi, lupi, râşi- în afara Rusiei, precum şi zone întinse de păduri naturale intacte.

Modul nostru de lucru
Realizarea scopurilor noastre principale – conservarea, refacerea şi gospodărirea durabilă în regiunea Carpato-Dunăreană – se face prin:

Proiecte Model: WWF utilizează abordări inovatoare în teren, pentru a produce rezultate palpabile, vizibile care ilustrează strategia organizaţiei.
Lobby şi advocacy: WWF convinge factorii de decizie locali, naţionali şi internaţionali să creeze strategii şi legislaţii care să sprijine conservarea naturii şi dezvoltarea durabilă.
Parteneriate: WWF acţionează, ori de câte ori este posibil, în parteneriat cu guverne, ONG-uri şi agenţi economici;
Conştientizare: Printr-o gamă largă de activităţi de comunicare, WWF determină sensibilizarea factorilor de interes, inclusiv a publicului larg, şi înţelegerea de către aceştia a problemelor existente.
Crearea capacităţii instituţionale: WWF sprijină formarea de noi abilităţi şi furnizarea de noi cunoştinţe la nivelul guvernelor, ONG-urilor şi a altor factori de interes din întreaga regiune.

Rol cheie în regiune

În aprilie 2001, Programul WWF Dunăre-Carpaţi a organizat prima întâlnire la nivel înalt privind Mediul şi Dezvoltarea durabilă în regiunea Dunăre-Carpaţi, în Bucureşti, România. Declaraţia adoptată în cadrul acestei întâlniri de către reprezentanţii conducerii a nouă state din regiune exprimă angajamentul acestora cu privire la conservarea naturii în zonă.

Programul WWF Dunăre-Carpaţi este în prezent un important promotor al îmbunătăţirii mediului în regiunea Dunăre-Carpaţi şi colaborează îndeaproape cu donatori internaţionali, guverne locale şi factori de interes.

Întrucât numeroase state din regiune au aderat de curând sau urmează să adere la UE, un element major al activităţii Programului WWF Dunăre-Carpaţi îl constituie elaborarea şi implementarea strategiilor şi legislaţiei UE. Pe măsură ce aceste strategii sunt puse în practică, se acordă tot mai multă atenţie colaborării cu diferiţi factori de interes, inclusiv agenţi economici, agricultori şi autorităţi locale, în vederea găsirii unor soluţii practice favorabile atât pentru populaţie, cât şi pentru natură.

Repere ale activităţii WWF în regiunea Dunăre-Carpaţi

1992: WWF înfiinţează „Programul Dunărea Verde”, în scopul protejării Dunării şi a Deltei Dunării;
1998: WWF înfiinţează Programul WWF Dunăre-Carpaţi, cu rolul de a coordona şi conduce activităţile pentru protecţia acestor două eco-regiuni;
2000: Cu sprijinul WWF, guvernele României, Bulgariei, Ucrainei şi Moldovei semneazăAcordul pentru Coridorul Verde al Dunării Inferioare, cea mai mare iniţiativă internaţională pentru protecţia şi refacerea naturii din Europa;
WWF lansează Iniţiativa Eco-regiunea Carpaţi, platformă a ONG-urilor şi institutelor dedicate protejării Munţilor Carpaţi;
2001: 18 conducători de stat participă la Întâlnirea la Nivel Înalt pentru Mediu şi Dezvoltare Durabilă în Regiunea Dunăre-Carpaţi, organizată de WWF în colaborare cu guvernul României;
WWF lansează Iniţiativa Aderării la UE, cu scopul de a sprijini statele candidate în elaborarea şi implementarea legislaţiei şi programării UE cu privire la mediu;
2003: Miniştrii mediului semnează la Kiev Convenţia Carpatică;
2006: Convenţia Carpatică intră în vigoare. Programul WWF Dunăre-Carpaţi înfiinţează birouri cu personalitatate juridică în România şi Bulgaria.

Organizaţia de mediu WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), Agenția pentru Protecția Mediului Olt și Agenția pentru Protecția Mediului Teleorman au organizat sâmbătă, 6 noiembrie, la Confluența Olt-Dunăre, în localitatea Islaz din județul Teleorman, o acţiune de plantare a peste 3 hectare cu plop alb şi salcie albă. Scopul acestei activități este crearea unor zone de cuibărit și liniște pentru populația de cormoran mic, implicarea comunității locale şi sporirea gradului de conştientizare cu privire la importanţa ecologică a acestor păsări şi la ameninţările la care sunt supuse.

Evenimentul face parte din proiectul LIFE Nature „Conservarea transfrontalieră a cormoranului mic (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus) şi raţei roşii (Aythya nyroca) în situri cheie din România şi Bulgaria” (pe scurt, „Green Borders – Frontiere Verzi”), demarat, în ianuarie 2009, de WWF Programul Dunăre-Carpați România în parteneriat cu Agenţia pentru Protecţia Mediului Olt, Agenţia pentru Protecţia Mediului Teleorman, Societatea Ornitologică Română, WWF Programul Dunăre-Carpaţi Bulgaria, Parcul Natural Persina din Bulgaria şi Ferma Rotunda, o pescărie din judeţul Mehedinți.

„Distrugerea zonelor de cuibărire ale populațiilor de cormoran mic și rață roșie a fost identificată drept una dintre principalele amenințări la adresa celor două specii, astfel că activitatea de plantare de astăzi – de reconstruire a „casei păsărilor” – se înscrie în rândul acțiunilor care sunt implementate pentru conservarea acestora.”, a declarat Cristian Tetelea, coordonatorul proiectului.

Mai mult decât atât, evenimentul de sâmbătă, „Facem casă bună cormoranului!”, a prezentat acțiunile care se vor derula în cadrul proiectului şi beneficiile pentru comunitățile locale, propunându-şi să faciliteze interacțiunea între parteneri, comunitatea locală și mass-media și să implice participanții într-una dintre activitățile concrete din proiect: plantarea de arbori.

Dacă în Delta Dunării cormoranul mic şi raţa roşie sunt protejate, aflându-se într-o rezervaţie a biosferei, populaţia răspândită de-a lungul Dunării, atât în România cât şi în Bulgaria, se află sub continuă ameninţare, sub impactul activităţilor umane. Depozitarea deşeurilor de-a lungul apei, utilizarea excesivă a fertilizatorilor în pescării, practicarea unui turism la scară largă, toate acestea afectează calitatea habitatelor celor două specii prezente în lungul Dunării.

Obiectivul principal al proiectului „Frontiere Verzi”, implementat atât în România, cât şi în Bulgaria, este să asigure condiţiile favorabile de conservare pentru cele două specii de păsări. Concret, acest lucru presupune, în primul rând, conservarea şi reconstrucţia zonelor umede de-a lungul Dunării folosite ca zone de hrănire şi cuibărire, diminuarea pagubelor produse asupra pescăriilor de către cormoranul mic, dar şi instruirea actorilor locali (implicaţi în mare parte în activităţi de pescuit şi vânătoare), cu privire la statutul de conservare al celor două specii şi necesităţile ecologice ale acestora. Proiectul se desfăşoară pe durata a 4 ani.

Live tiger found in luggage

Bangkok, Thailand. August 26, 2010 - A two-month-old tiger cub was found sedated and hidden among stuffed-tiger toys in the luggage of a woman at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Thai national was scheduled to board a Mahan Air flight destined for Iran when she had trouble checking in her oversized bag.

Airports of Thailand (AOT) staff suspected something amiss when they scanned the bag and x-ray images showed an item resembling a real cat.

Russian Tiger Habitat Gets a Boost With Protection of Key Tree Species

The Russian government has introduced measures to protect Korean Pine, a key species found in Amur Tiger habitat in the Russian Far East, WWF and TRAFFIC announced. Rising global demand for Korean Pine has led to a massive increase in logging, much of it carried out illegally in Russia’s remaining temperate forests.

Around 400 Amur Tigers survive in the native Korean Pine forests of the Russian Far East and north-east China, where the pine nuts are an essential food source for tiger prey species.

“The fate of the Amur Tiger is inextricably linked to the safeguard of the Korean Pine,” said Pauline Verheij, joint TRAFFIC and WWF Tiger Trade Program Manager.

White House energy adviser Carol Browner has recently been making the talk show rounds and telling the public about a new government assessment that shows that 75% of the oil from BP’s drilling disaster has either been captured, burned off, evaporated or broken down in the Gulf. As she puts it, “Mother Nature did her part….”

You’re not alone if you think that sounds too good to be true.

That’s why we’ve sailed the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise to the Gulf and are embarking tomorrow on a three-month expedition to provide independent scientific analysis of the impacts of both the oil and chemical dispersants on the Gulf ecosystem. We have to know the truth about the damage that was done.

Relying on BP and federal officials to do that job for us would be foolish at this point. From day one, BP was doing everything in its power to hide the true extent of the disaster and they often had the help of a federal government who seemed more concerned with maintaining its public image than addressing the problem. The Gulf deserves better. We deserve better.

But we don’t have to run a single test to prove that oil drilling is dangerous and deadly. BP has done that work for us. And we don’t need any elaborate solutions to solve the problem either. What we need is to put an end to all new drilling and to transition to clean, renewable sources of energy.

Help us kick-off our tour of the Gulf by taking action and telling Congress “No New Drilling!” today.

Europa decide în final să pună embargou pe lemnul tăiat ilegal

România — Comisia, Parlamentul și Consiliul European, au ajuns în final la un acord politic de a stopa importurile ilegale de lemn.

La 7 ani de la lansarea tratativelor și după 2 ani de negocieri intense, Bruxelles face un pas în vederea protejării pădurilor. Un comunicat de presă din 16 iunie indică faptul că textul legislativ ar trebui să fie examinat de către Parlament în iulie, și de către guverne membre UE în această toamnă. Ar trebui să intre în vigoare în 2012. Dacă această lege este votată, comercializarea lemnului tăiat ilegal va fi interzis de către europeni. Cea mai mare piață de desfacere dinlume este pe cale să-și închidă porțile firmelor care-și bazează activitatea exclusiv pe traficul ilegal și distrugerea forestieră. Piața neagră a lemnului este orchestrată de criminali care alimentează conflicte, fură veniturile guvernelor și cauzează daune ireversibile mediului înconjurător.

O evoluție majoră către o gestiune durabilă a pădurilor

Legea va trimite un semnal puternic și va permite schimbări profunde în industria forestieră. Firmele europene vor trebui să demonstreze proveniența lemnului și a produselor derivate, precum și justificarea legalității acestora. Această măsură va consolida într-un mod semnificativ legile europene în domeniul comerțului cu lemn.

Deocamdată legea este destul de limitată

Totuși legea propusă de UE pare limitată, sub câteva aspecte. Sistemele de sancțiuni și penalități sunt foarte slabe, data intrării în vigoare a legii, fiind târzie, iar produsele imprimate, cum ar fi cărțile, nu fac obiectul acesteia.

Raised in captive breeding facilities, these animals grow used to humans and make easy targets for trophy hunters when their owners offer their lives for profit. În urma protestelor Greenpeace și a solicitărilor de la consumatori, din ultimele două luni, compania Nestlé a renunțat la folosirea uleiului de palmier și a hârtiei obținute prin defrișarea pădurilor tropicale indoneziene. Greenpeace mulțumește sutelor de mii de susţinători ai campaniei Kit Kat-Nestlé, celor care au sunat și au trimis e-mailuri companiei Nestlé sau care au diseminat mesajul campaniei pe paginile de Facebook, Twitter sau în alte reţele sociale. Ministerul Economiei - bun de plată în procesul cu Greenpeace

THORP is a nuclear reprocessing plant at Sellafield in the UK. It has been plagued with problems since it opened in 1994, and has been labeled a white elephant by critics.
This shipment of high-level radioactive waste on the vessel the Pacific Sandpiper is expected to arrive at the port of Mutsu-Ogawara in Aomori in early March. It is the first shipment from THORP. Many more shipments are to follow.
The current shipment contains 28 “vitrified” high-level radioactive waste (HLW) canisters each weighing 500kg. Each canister has 30 times the radiation released from the Hiroshima bomb.
The waste is owned by Japanese electric utilities and is being returned after it was reprocessed at the THORP plant, a process that extracts plutonium and uranium, separating it from high-level waste. Approximately 1,000 canisters of HLW are to be shipped from the plant to Japan over a period of ten years.
“Vitrification” is a process in which the high-level radioactive liquid waste is made solid, bonding it into a glass matrix. This liquid is then poured into a canister. However, if this process is not done properly, the waste can leak and corrode the canister.
There is no government or independent authority that inspects the quality of the vitrified high-level radioactive waste being produced at THORP. The only information comes from the operator.
This waste that is returned to Japan is stored at the Vitrified Waste Storage Center on the site of the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plan in Aomori. Under an agreement with Aomori Prefecture, This waste may be stored in this facility from 30 to a maximum of 50 years from the time it arrives at the site.
If the quality of the vitrification is poor and the waste corrodes the canisters, it will be impossible to transport out for final storage. No final waste disposal site has been chosen, and there is no indication that a suitable site will be found.
THORP is owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and operated by Sellafield Ltd., after being taken over from BNFL (British Nuclear Fuels plc). The NDA took control of BNFL's nuclear sites in 2005. The company faced huge decommissioning costs and its liabilities exceeded its assets.
In May 2005 THORP suffered a large leak of a highly radioactive solution due to a design error. The complacent culture at the plant delayed detection of the leak for 9 months. It was classified as a “serious incident” on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES).
Japan should stop reprocessing of nuclear wastes. Otherwise it will threaten not only Aomori but also all of Japan and even neighbor countries.
The Aomori governor has a right to refuse this plan made by the central government of Japan.

Often we take for granted our access of the internet and the way it empower us to participate in discussions and speak about the things that are important to us.

But Karim Amer, a young blogger from Egypt, was sentenced to four years in prison for doing just these things. »

Amer was charged with publishing material critical of Islam and Egypt's President Hosni Mubarek and imprisoned, despite the fact that he acted within his universal right to peaceful freedom of expression.

Even worse, Amer claims that while imprisoned, he has been beaten at least twice under the supervision of a prison officer.

All people should have the freedom to peacefully express their opinions. Tell Egyptian President Hosni Mubarek to free Amer and accept all people's right to freedom of expression. »

Din data de 5.07.2010 pe o perioada inca nedeterminata, in centrul Zalaului , Crucea Rosie alaturi de Inspectoratul teritorial pentru situatii de urgenta Salaj, colecteaza ajutoare umanitare pentru sinistratii din Moldova, intre orele 8.00 - 21.00 . Donatiile care se primesc constau in alimente neperisabile [ ulei, apa, zahar, faina, malai, paste, conserve s.a.] si materiale de igiena personala [ sapunuri, sampoane, detergenti, hartie igienica, sampon, s.a.] cat si paturi si perne in buna stare. Pe data de marti- 6 iulie zaloanii au fost mai darnici s-au adunat de la populatie : haine si paturi, covoare, un aragaz, 9 sticle de apa de 5 litri, 2 baxuri de apa a cate 2l, 24 de sticle de ulei, 31 kg de faina alba, 17 kg de orez,27 kg de zahar, 63 de conserve, paste fainoase, faina de malai si detergenti, paste de dinti , geluri de dus, s.a.m.d. Ajutoarele sunt colectate zilnic , iar transportul catre Moldova se va face in cateva zile, in functie de donatiile adunate.

România — Cu ocazia Zilei Mondiale a Mediului voluntarii Greenpeace din Bucureşti, Bacău şi Iaşi şi-au unit forţele în diferite acţiuni pe plan local.

În Bucureşti, voluntarii Greenpeace au participat la igienizarea Pădurii Băneasa, într-o încercare de a trage un semnal de alarmă vizavi de ce înseamnă protejarea mediului şi colectare selectivă.

În numai câteva ore, Pădurea Băneasa, invadată de gunoaie, a fost din nou primitoare pentru doritorii de ieşiri în natură. Voluntarii au fost împărţiţi pe grupe şi fiecare a avut de „explorat” o anumită zonă plină cu gunoaie.

Activitatea de igienizare a fost organizată de Carpatia-Asociatia de Turism şi Ecologie, alături de alte ONG-uri de mediu, în colaborare cu Greenpeace România.

În Bacau, a avut loc Marşul Verde, la care s-au alăturat rând pe rând, biciclişti şi tineri pe role. S-a demonstrat că mijloacele alternative de transport sunt mult mai eficiente în lupta pentru salvarea Planetei.

La Iaşi voluntarii Greenpeace au organizat o serie de activităti, derulate pe parcursul întregii Zile a Mediului. Acestia au amplasat în diverse locaţii din oraş panouri pe care oamenii au avut ocazia să-şi scrie părerile referitoare la mediul înconjurător. Concomitent, au fost organizate mai multe scenete cu rolul de conştientizare a problemelor de mediului (deşeurile aruncate la întâmplare şi defrişările).
De asemenea au avut loc şi două videoproiecţii de documentare pe teme de mediu realizate de Greenpeace Internaţional.

România — Concernul german de energie RWE, care este implicat în construcţia unităţilor 3 şi 4 ale centralei nucleare Cernavodă din România, va dezvolta două proiecte în domeniul energiei eoliene. Acestea vor avea o capacitate totală de 350 MW şi vor fi plasate în două locaţii din sud-estul României.

Concernul german de energie RWE, care este implicat în construcţia unităţilor 3 şi 4 ale centralei nucleare Cernavodă din România, va dezvolta două proiecte în domeniul energiei eoliene. Acestea vor avea o capacitate totală de 350 MW şi vor fi plasate în două locaţii din sud-estul României.

Proiectul companiei a atins un stadiu avansat în câştigul aprobărilor necesare pentru construcţia a două parcuri eoliene în apropierea oraşului Constanţa. Unul dintre acestea va avea o putere energetică de 200 MW, iar celălalt de 150 MW. Investitorii iau în calcul şi alte locaţii inclusiv zone din nord-estul României, precum Moldova.

Nişa de energie eoliană, care a atras până acum mulţi alţi investitori străini, printre care şi giganţi în domeniul energetic precum CEZ din Republica Cehă, Enel din Italia şi Iberdrola din Spania, reprezintă a doua oportunitate a concernului RWE pentru proiecte de dezvoltare în România.

Având în vedere capacitatea energetică a celor două parcuri eoliene, costurile investiţiilor pentru ambele proiecte ar putea ajunge până la 500- 600 milioane Euro. Majoritatea proiectelor în domeniul energiei eoliene, anunțate până în prezent au ca locaţie principală zona Dobrogei, aflată în sud-estul României în vecinătatea Mării Negre.

Japonia — Activiștii Greenpeace au demarat o investigație de interes public și au expus corupția din industria japoneză de pescuit balene, acest fapt fiind remarcat de Înalta Comisie a Națiunilor Unite pentru Drepturile Omului. În ciuda acestui fapt, astăzi, în tribunal, a fost cerută cea mai lungă pedeapsă cu închisoarea din istoria de peste 40 de ani a organizației. Mărturii din industria pescuitului de balene și denunțatori, împreună cu mărturiile contradictorii ale acuzării nu au reușit să prevină sentința disproporționată.

Unite pe tema Detenției Arbitrare a declarat că a 26-a zi de detenție a activiștilor Junichi
Sato și Toru Suzuki a fost o încălcare a drepturilor omului. În ciuda acestui fapt, astăzi,
procurorul din Aomori a cerut ca fiecare să fie închis pentru un an și șase luni pentru
furt și încălcarea proprietății private.

Activiștii susțin că au acționat pașnic și în interesul public – pentru a aduna dovezi care confirmă frauda cu carne de balenă, plătită de publicul japonez. Ca stat semnatar al tratatelor internaționale de protecție a drepturilor omului, Japonia trebuie să acționeze în consecință.
În timp ce investigau acuzații de corupție sistemică în cadrul programului de pescuit balene din oceanele sudice, finanțat din fonduri publice, Sato și Suzuki au interceptat carne de balenă, pe care surse din interiorul industriei au declarat că era destinată pieței negre. Activiștii au folosit această carne ca dovadă pentru a solicita o investigație oficială. Aceasta a fost refuzată fără motiv de către autorități, iar cei doi activiști au fost arestați. Durata de detenție, interogatoriul și acuzațiile au fost condamnate de organizațiile internaționale de protecție a drepturilor omului, experți în drept și politicieni, inclusiv laureatul Premiului Nobel, Arhiepiscopul Desmond Tutu.

Kumi Naidoo, Directorul Executiv al Greenpeace International, a declarat că acțiunile lui Junichi și Toru au fost tot timpul pașnice și destinate binelui public. El a adăugat că experții în drepturile omului au considerat cazul ca fiind motivat politic, încă un exemplu al trendului global în creștere al autorităților care folosesc legea pentru a reduce la tăcere manifestările incomode de opunere ale societății civile.

Cererea pentru închiderea activiștilor sosește tocmai acum, la începutul întrunirilor din cadrul Comisiei Internaționale pentru Reglementarea Pescuitului de Balene din Agadir. Peste jumătate de milion de mesaje de protest au fost trimise guvernului japonez de la arestarea celor doi activiști în iunie 2008.

Toru Suzuki a declarat că este timpul ca noul prim ministru japonez, Naoto Kan, trebuie să demonstreze că poate fi un lider care să apere drepturile și importanța societății civile.

Data verdictului încă nu este confirmată.

The irreplaceable biodiversity of Henoko Sea

The Henoko Sea in the northern part of Okinawa's main island serves as a national natural monument. Its seaweed beds and diverse coral growths are rich in biodiversity, and provide homes for a variety of flora and fauna, including endangered species of dugong and rare anemonefish.

Dugongs are the only Sirenians (Sea cows) among herbivorous mammals living in Japan, but because of post World War II overfishing only a few dozen are left. Seaweed, the main food of dugongs, grows in Henoko Sea, while the coral reef provides habitat for the anemonefish and colorful tropical fish, and support mangrove forests in complete harmony. All together these life forms constitute an irreplaceable and abundant ecosystem.

Henoko sea's rich biodiversity, again on the brink of collapse

Marine biodiversity in the Henoko sea was in danger of being destroyed by massive land reclamation after the SACO (Special Actions Committee on Okinawa) review the position of U.S. military bases in Okinawa and submitted a report suggesting a replacement facility be constructed in Henoko during the reign of the Liberal Democratic Party. Fortunately, with the change of government last year, the situation changed and the Democratic Party listened to the opinions of local people who were against the destruction of marine biodiversity in the Henoko Sea.

However, due to the difficulties of finding a new location for Futenma Air Station, a new plan to build a runway for the U.S. military base using a so-called "Quick Installation Platform (QIP)" in the Henoko Sea has been submitted. Henoko Sea is once again facing destruction by the construction of a U.S. military base.

Is the "Quick Installation Platform" method really environmentally-friendly?

There are many problems with the "Quick Installation Platform" and it cannot be confidently said that the method is environmentally-friendly. For example, a runway on a "Quick Installation Platform" blocks sunlight from reaching underwater plants, preventing photosynthesis from occurring in seaweed beds and coral. Furthermore, thick jetty piles change tidal flows, causing a drastic change in the ocean environment. If the number of seaweed beds or coral, which is the basis of the ecosystem, decreases due to the runway, the balance of the entire marine ecosystem of Henoko area will be lost, and this will significantly impact biodiversity. This may result into the extinction of dugongs which are left in an environment where their main food, seaweed, does not grow.

Isn’t it impossible to construct a military base in Henoko!?

In the U.S., pro-environment lawyers and people in Okinawa joined forces to file a lawsuit against the Defense Secretary at the time (so-called "Okinawa Dugong v. Rumsfeld"), and the interlocutory judgment declared that it is against the law for the U.S. to reclaim the habitat of dugongs (dugong is listed as a "protected species" under the National Historic Preservation Act). A final decision is still to come. This means that the U.S. is urging Japan to do what they are not allowed to do by law.

Although Prime Minister Hatoyama said "Reclaiming the coast of Henoko is a blasphemy against nature", and it seemed that the Democratic Party was addressing the issue fairly by listening to the opinions of local people and being conscious of preserving biodiversity, it has been largely swayed. If things remain as they are, the DPJ will show itself to be no different to the old government, and the voice of the nation will be lost. Therefore, we should send messages expressing our thoughts and opinions to Prime Minister Hatoyama and the DPJ so that the plan threatening the entire Henoko Sea can once again be withdrawn.

Guess what? Nestlé has gone and agreed to our campaign demands!

And it's your emails, phone calls, video views, donations and Facebook messages which have made this massive victory possible.

We really couldn't have done it without you.

Greenpeace campaigners have met several times with Nestlé executives to discuss the problems in sourcing their palm oil and paper products and
things were certainly moving forward.

But we didn't expect them to come up with such a comprehensive 'zero deforestation' policy so quickly.

Just yesterday , Nestlé announced a plan which will identify and remove any companies in their supply chain with links to deforestation, including the infamous Sinar Mas.

This plan still needs to be followed up with action, and the Forest Trust - an independent organisation we've worked with before - will be closely
monitoring Nestlé's progress.

But as many of you have pointed out, Nestlé is not the only company involved in the palm oil industry and while this is a fantastic result, there's
still a lot more to do before the destruction of Indonesia's rainforests is brought to a halt. So let's get started right away.

Moving the world’s largest food and beverage company is an awesome first step.

This historic decision is thanks to the 300,000 people worldwide who took action and contacted Nestlé.

Greenpeace will continue to campaign against companies involved in rainforest destruction and lend a helping hand to the Indonesian President to meet his target of emission reduction targets by protecting the peatlands and the last remaining rainforests of the world.

It’s days like today that remind us we all have the power to make a positive difference.

The 24-year ban on hunting and killing whales could be lifted in a matter of weeks -- time is running out.
The proposal by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) would legalize whale hunting just when some endangered species are bouncing back from decades of over-hunting.
The IWC needs to know their proposal is out of touch with what the public wants for whales. Germany has a key role on the Commission -- please write the German Federal Ministry for Agriculture and stop the sell out of the whales »

Tell Obama to keep his promise to save the whales. Add your name and a personal message to the thousands we’ve already collected and we’ll deliver it to the White House on June 3rd.

The headline reads like a bad joke: “U.S. plans to save whales by killing whales.” But it’s no joke.

In an altogether shocking move, President Obama’s delegation to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has decided to back a plan that would legalize commercial whaling -- including in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary -- for the first time since the international ban was passed over 20 years ago.

We only have until the start of the IWC meetings in June to show the President that this plan is a horrible idea. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

We’ll be delivering all the names and messages we collect to high-ranking officials in the White House on June 3rd.

Back in 1975, Greenpeace launched the world’s first-ever Save the Whales campaign. The images we brought back from our first voyage sparked an international outcry and moved a generation of environmentalists into action. Eventually, after a decade of intense activism, the IWC agreed to ban commercial whaling. That was 1986 and it was one of our greatest moments as an organization -- it was also one of the greatest moments for activists like you.

We could lose it all this June unless we’re able to change the President’s mind. We’ve done it before. Now we need to do it again.

A couple of weeks ago Greenpeace launched a week-long Water Watch Camp to bring attention to and monitor the effects of the current El Niño episode on Angat Dam. The dam supplies 97% of Metro Manila’s household and industrial water requirements, irrigation for agricultural lands in Bulacan and Pampanga, and water for the operation of a hydroelectric power plant for Metro Manila. The water level in the reservoir breached the 180masl (meters above sea level) critical point on April 13 and continues to recede by about 0.24meters a day -- or a meter every four to five days.
With the Philippine presidential elections only weeks away we are calling on our future president to put, urgent measures to protect and conserve the Philippines’ water resources, during their first hundred days in office should they be elected as the next President of the Republic.
We have submitted letters of demand to presidential candidates to push them for their commitments to protect the country’s water sources. Greenpeace bikers delivered the letters, along with images of drought affected areas in the country, in a tour of the headquarters of the nine presidentiables –so far only 3 of them have committed to protect our water resources: Nicanor Perlas, J.C. Delos Reyes and Jamby Madrigal.
We would like to ask for your help in asking the remaining candidates that you are looking to them as the future leaders of this nation to protect our water resources now as water supply is starting to run low.
